Craig's first year of college was at the University of Arizona. Driving between Salt Lake and Tucson, he visited Petrified Forest NP, Canyon de Chelly NM, and the Grand Canyon NP. During his freshman year he was at Saguaro NM, now a national park. He took pictures of all of these except Saguaro. The party there was not documented. The photos of the other sites may be lost.
We visited the Grand Canyon sometime in the 1980s. We are looking for those photos. Also, in the 1980s, we visited the north rim when staying in Kanab, Utah where Craig's mother then lived.
In 1986, we signed up to go to American Express' (Craig's employer at the time) chosen mile for Hands Across America. American Express paid for the transportation to the Navajo Nation and for all the food at the site. Hands Across America was a fund raiser for homeless and hungry Americans. The goal was to have people hold hands across the country. It was in Arizona that the gaps were wide. American Express chose their particular mile because of its remoteness. In spite of the gaps, five million people participated. Over 1,000 American Express employees and their families participated, We had a Salt Lake channel 2 reporter and cameraman on our bus ride down. At the site, we were joined by members of the Navajo Nation, indigenous Bolivians who wanted to participate, Arizona Governor Bruce Babbitt and some celebrities. This was Arizona during the Memorial Day weekend and so it was hot. The altitude made it easier.
In 2026 we stayed in Phoenix and visited the Grand Canyon and Sedona.
