Christchurch 2017
After flying from Sydney, we settled in our next hotel in Christchurch. We had dinner at the home of a couple who live there. The husband was a priest in the Church of New Zealand. The next day was a bus tour of the city. There was still significant damage unrepaired from the Christchurch earthquakes. A few days before we arrived, it was announced that the cathedral was going to be rebuilt. The other option was demolition. We then went to the International Antarctic Centre. We recommend the centre to anyone visiting Christchurch. The next day, we traveled by bus to Queenstown, which took most of the day.
The International Antarctic Centre. Across the street is the U.S. hanger and Antarctic headquarters. A rescued blue penguin, native to New Zealand, in the centre.
Cardboard Cathedral, built as temporary meeting place. Anglican cathedral to be repaired. Other unattended earthquake damage.
